This year really has felt, in some ways, like the world has run out of luck. A pandemic, a succession of hapless, right-wing Governments manipulating just about everything in their favour, and the general feeling that it is going to be a long route out of this.
This week, I’m turning my hand to the defence of self, or personal protection. This can manifest itself in physical or emotional forms, and can be good or bad for you – and indeed the aims can be very different indeed.
Watching Frank Turner perform all of his (exceptional) album England Keep My Bones the other week – with a packed, young crowd bellowing along to every word – got me thinking. Who else is actually writing songs about being proud to be English (or in some cases, British?)? Was there anyone else?
