Right then: part three of exclamations, and we’re onto “Woo!” this week.

Last week, one of the bastions of Alternative Rock died. If you don’t know who Steve Albini was, you’ve certainly heard a song he was involved in. He was in bands since the early eighties, and recorded/produced/engineered hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of records (his Discogs page shows over 1,400 releases credited to him in […]
Into July, and with some great new music coming our way. This post is a roundup of (relevant to this site) new and upcoming music, a nod to upcoming events and livestreams both from this website and others, and also a catchup of what I’ve posted recently. Thanks to everyone who sends me new music […]
A very busy couple of weeks to catch up on. This post is a roundup of (relevant to this site) new and upcoming music, a nod to upcoming events and livestreams both from this website and others, and also a catchup of what I’ve posted recently. Thanks to everyone who sends me new music and […]
My feelings on the Monarchy and “celebrations” like this weekend just past are well known, so I decided to avoid any posts on the subject this time around. Instead, I got thinking the other week about songs about excitement, and things that might thrill me instead.
After the light last week, there must be darkness, I guess. So despite the spring weather, I’m heading into the dark.
For the majority of my life, I’ve never really lived in the country. I’ve always been in urban environments, where the nearest green space is a local park, and the only wildlife I got to see were urban birdlife, or urban foxes for the most part.
In a decision that perhaps would have surprised me a few years ago, never mind my wife, later this week we move out of London, our home for more than the past decade, for a new life by the coast. I’ve spent over a quarter of my life in this one flat in Finsbury Park, […]
Not for the first time, today I’m digging back into my original notes for a new /Tuesday Ten. I’ve actually been planning to write about this for years but hadn’t had the inspiration or the songs for it, until I finally dug it out of the “to do” pile and offered it out to my […]
We keep going amid the lockdown. There are new releases, and still, new music coming through, and buying music right now is the only way we can help. The events listing is still being updated, but obviously, an awful lot is being postponed, cancelled or changed right now.

I’ve been conscious that lately, I seem to have been covering darker subjects in this series, and I began to wonder, maybe, I should do a more positive post? Right now many friends are striving, working, and hoping for something better in one way or another, so I put out a call for songs that […]
Thirty years ago last week – last Thursday, in fact, one of the most important alternative rock albums ever was released. Doolittle by Pixies remains a high-watermark, arguably kickstarted the takeover of the airwaves by alternative rock in the early nineties, and of course, paved the way for countless other bands – Nirvana of course […]
In a remarkable coincidence (and really, it is!), Tuesday Ten: 340 this week happened to fall in the week where I reach the landmark age of 40. When I realised this the other week, I decided to ask my regular readers and contributors on Facebook for songs that celebrate…something, anything.
I’ve long used Google Timeline, as I’m curious about just how far I do travel, and totting up some numbers for 2018 so far – and by chance, today is the day 100 of the year – provided some eye-opening numbers, going on the fact that I haven’t really gone very far this year, so […]
Last week I was looking at weakness, and songs thereof, and this week, it’s the flipside.
A warning: this week’s Tuesday Ten features adult and sexual themes. Still here? Thought you might be.
Playing with yourself. Pleasuring oneself. Wanking. Jerk off. Whack off. Frigging. Self-abuse. Self-pollution. Spank the monkey. Flip the bean. Onanism. etc.
After as usual a month or two off from this – new releases are thin on the ground at the end of the year anyway, and the end-of-year lists (start here if you missed them) take up a lot of time – it’s time to get back to telling you, the reader, about some of […]
This week, time for a Tuesday Ten I’ve been thinking about and working on, gradually, for a few months. I was set a challenge, you see: to come up with a Tuesday Ten where deaths occur “on camera” (i.e. are described or happen in the songs). However, I could not rely on some of the […]
