Tuesday Ten: 101: Tracks of the Month (May 2010)
Start of the month, so another quick roundup:
Start of the month, so another quick roundup:
It’s long been clear that Matt Fanale couldn’t give a flying fuck about what genre he should fit in, whether he is industrial or not, and what musical fashion he should be following. So after a bunch of well-received albums on Crunch Pod, he’s gone it alone with this one, self-releasing it. And not to […]
With a big summer of sport coming up – well, ok, the World Cup, as well as the usual stuff like Wimbledon, the British Grand Prix, etc – let’s have a look at the musical world of sports. Not all have been good, mind – all too often songs about one sport or the other […]
You could never accuse David Thrussel of following the herd. Staunchly anti-capitalist, anti-music industry, and more than willing to indulge his apparent love of god-knows-how-many different genres of music and also a wickedly droll sense of humour on every release he can, he has returned under his long-running Snog moniker for ‘their’ first album in […]
Today marks the 30th anniversary of Ian Curtis’ death. The influence of his band and of course New Order that formed in the wake of his death has been enormous, and nowhere is this shown more by the massive list of covers of both band’s songs.
Something of a touchy subject for this week, perhaps, but this list was inspired after hearing one song too many in this realm from one of the bands in this list. Some will have a higher, er, tolerance than others for this kind of thing, but with the amount of music I hear I frequently […]
A new month, a new roundup of new and not-so-new tracks I think you should hear.
A good night overall, a few technical niggles notwithstanding. Either way, great to see everyone, and also to catch up with the guys from Inertia for the first time in what feels like a long time! There are various photos from the night online as always, click on the photo to the left. It was […]
So after a couple of weeks of work, here are my top twenty albums of the 90s. There is again a Spotify playlist accompaniment to it, which is this time missing four entries, which with it being the top twenty is a little frustrating…
The queue to get in was big, they opened the doors late, and as we were a bit of a way down the queue, we missed most of the first act Bitter Ruin, who were a theatrical male-female duo who were both vocalists, with he also playing acoustic guitar, and she danced a bit too. […]
Onto part four of my 90s album run-down. There is again a Spotify playlist accompaniment to it, which is again only missing a couple of entries.
Onto part three of my 90s album run-down. There is again a Spotify playlist accompaniment to it, which is only missing a couple of entries (it's remarkable how much is now on Spotify, actually!).
Never mind this album having been out a little while, it was quite a while in coming, too. It is five years or so since I first came across Joseph Byer’s work, when a couple of fantastic tracks appeared on two US-based compilations. Not a lot else was then heard for some time, and when […]
Following on from Tuesday, here's part two of my 90s albums rundown. This is fun, even if a little time consuming – and it's reminding me of songs I've not heard in a while, in some cases. As per Tuesday, there is a Spotify playlist accompaniment once again, with no omissions this time.
Back in the mists of time (in other words, back in 2009), I did a rundown of – according to me – the best songs and albums of the past decade, and then followed it up with similar treatment of the 90s. Although, I only ever got the best songs done.
This week: my usual weekly roundup of ten tracks worth hearing.
Autonomy was reasonably well-attended, as well as the usual suspects. Not the best DJing I’ve ever done – frankly at points it just didn’t work out – but I got it sorted in the end, though, and the reaction to some new stuff played was immensely surprising (in a good way!).
This is, by all accounts, a bloody odd coming-together of minds. I’ve come across Punish Yourself before, an insane French industrial-punk-dayglo soundclash of a band, but not Sonic Area, who appear to be a lot more restrained and experimental on first listen. So, why have they come together? It appears to be related to the […]
I’ve been thinking a lot about death of late. A friend sadly passed away on Sunday night after a long battle with illness, while in the musical world the death of Alex Chilton, frontman of Big Star, last week cast something of a shadow over SXSW – not least because he was due to play […]
Let’s say a recent post by a friend (“ten men I find more attractive than Johnny Depp”) has reminded me to go ahead with this week’s Tuesday Ten, a “possible” TT I’ve had on the backburner for a good three months or so. I can’t remember how it originally came about, but the list began […]
