A welcome to the many new readers of this page. This is the weekly Friday post, of new music coming your way this week and soon, as well as a look at the events and gigs in the future, and finally nods to any other notable news that affects artists and music that I cover […]
If you’ve been reading my work on /amodelofcontrol.com over the past decade or so, you will have seen me talk about Teeth of the Sea an awful lot. They’ve long been one of the most progressive bands in London, not to mention one of the best (and loudest!) live bands in the city too, and […]
I’ve been conscious that lately, I seem to have been covering darker subjects in this series, and I began to wonder, maybe, I should do a more positive post? Right now many friends are striving, working, and hoping for something better in one way or another, so I put out a call for songs that […]

Sometimes, it feels like my life is simply following a long list of instructions. How to work the various equipment in our homes and offices, how to use transport, how to get somewhere, the recipes we follow. Weather warnings, travel advice, reminders about things to do from friends and partners. How to do our jobs.

My gigging in 2020 has perhaps started slower than usual – I didn’t see a single show in January – but this might be down to the fact that by all accounts, there wasn’t a lot going on in January in our part of the music world. It was almost as if after a traumatic […]
As I’ve noted before, I ask about some subjects – and get a lot of suggestions – without actually using them immediately. Sometimes, it might take me a little while to sift through the songs that I have and work out how to string them together – and sometimes, the songs I get simply don’t […]

The new year has started well for new music. In fact very well, as all kinds of new music has been flying at me from all directions, or so it feels. Which is why this week has more than ten songs – I finally stopped at sixteen – and I suspect that future /Tracks of […]
My friend Jacqui turned 40 over the Christmas period, so decided to throw a party when more people could come and invited me and a few friends to DJ it. Naturally, it was a whole lot of fun. This was, of course, my first DJ set of the new decade.
Sometimes, an idle question online will inspire something quickly, much as happened this week. Hearing just one song while driving in the car – as it happens, a song that wasn’t featured in the final ten in the end (Terrovision’s Discotheque Wreck) – got me wondering about songs that deal with objectionable, or unpleasant people.
At the end of February (29-Feb to be exact), one of the more interesting, progressive promoters in London is marking Ten Years of Chaos at The Dome in Tufnell Park. That promoter is the collective known as Chaos Theory, who for the past ten years have been bringing London gig-goers interesting, experimental and thoughtful bills […]
Back for 2020, we’re nearly halfway in the alphabet, but M is going to take a few episodes. /transmission has had a bit of an upgrade over the Christmas period, with some new tech to improve the sound – feedback appreciated.

It’s long been clear that many musical artists are, frankly, narcissists. I mean, why else would they want to be onstage, opening themselves up to what could be a worldwide audience one day? So it maybe comes as no real surprise to find that there are a lot of songs where they are talking (or […]

Weirdly, I don’t think I’ve ever actually been to the circus. I’ve been to funfairs, I’ve seen clowns perform elsewhere, but even as a kid never set foot in a big top. I’ve seen them enough in film and on TV, mind, to know that maybe, just maybe, I’m not missing too much.
Thirty years ago, I first dipped my toes into alternative music thanks to the new-found wonders of MTV’s 120 Minutes, found Front 242 and Faith No More, and it literally changed my life. But as a not-even-teenager at this stage, my only outlet to discuss music were my slightly older stepbrothers (it took a long […]
