Welcome to /Countdown/2025 – this year’s wrap-up of the best new music that I’ve heard across the year, and the 22nd year of me starting to do such annual roundups (which began on LiveJournal before moving to this site). I begin as usual, with the best compilations and reissues in no particular order, although it […]
A few more weeks closer to the end of the year, and we’re now starting to see new releases for 2026 announced already… This post is a roundup of (relevant to this site) new and upcoming music, a nod to upcoming events and livestreams both from this website and others, and also a catchup of […]
Another roundup of the best new music recently released or announced, with another glut of new releases in the past couple of weeks in particular. There have also been a number of notable deaths in music this week alone: first Sly Stone, the legendary funk/soul band pioneer, then Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys… and […]
A bit more time this month has allowed a more regular posting schedule. This post is a roundup of (relevant to this site) new and upcoming music, a nod to upcoming events and livestreams both from this website and others, and also a catchup of what I’ve posted recently. Thanks to everyone who sends me […]
I turned forty-six last month, so I’m likely now in the right place for a midlife crisis.
This past week, my wife and I achieved something that for a good period of our relationship, we feared might be out of reach entirely: we bought a house.
After last week’s songs about being good, here’s the flipside.
Welcome to /Countdown/2022 – this year’s wrap-up of the best new music that I’ve heard across the year. I begin as usual, with the best compilations and reissues in no particular order, although it should be noted that as is the norm these days, there are a whole lot of reissues coming through.
Nearing the end of the year now – and thus I’m deep in writing my end of year lists already (coming in December). This post is a roundup of (relevant to this site) new and upcoming music, a nod to upcoming events and livestreams both from this website and others, and also a catchup of […]
The latest fortnightly update. This post is a roundup of (relevant to this site) new and upcoming music, a nod to upcoming events and livestreams both from this website and others, and also a catchup of what I’ve posted recently. Thanks to everyone who sends me new music and events, keeps me up to speed, […]
This week, I’m picking up on a recent suggestion thread that really got me thinking, as the very idea of secrets in song seems like an oxymoron. After all, if you reveal a secret in a song that then goes on to sell millions, that’s hardly a secret then, is it? /Tuesday Ten/427/Secret /Tuesday Ten/Playlists […]
Continuing the process of wrapping up the last decade before it disappears too far into the rearview mirror, this is the seventh part of the best tracks of the 2010s. This has been an interesting, and memory-laden trip doing this list. I’ve dredged up a few memories, reconnected with a few songs I’d not heard […]
The additional downtime at the moment has had one or two benefits for me – more of a chance to get my head down and get a few outstanding posts completed. I’m painfully aware that aside from regular /Tuesday Ten posts (and /Tuesday Ten/402 will follow tomorrow), I’ve not been posting as much as I’d […]
Some statistics for my gig-going in 2019. I went to 53 shows (each festival is counted by number of days – so Infest is three days, so counts for three shows), and saw 150 live sets. I saw 140 unique bands, eight of them more than once, at 37 venues, and my wife saw 46 […]
Onto week three of /Countdown/2019 on amodelofcontrol.com, and this week I’m looking at the best albums of the year. As I’m sure I’ve explained before, I treat the “year” as 01-December to 30-November, to allow me a cut-off point, and to allow this to be done and dusted before Christmas so that I can take […]
Thirty years ago last week – last Thursday, in fact, one of the most important alternative rock albums ever was released. Doolittle by Pixies remains a high-watermark, arguably kickstarted the takeover of the airwaves by alternative rock in the early nineties, and of course, paved the way for countless other bands – Nirvana of course […]
It’s Friday, therefore time for the usual amodelofcontrol.com round-up of new music coming your way this week and soon, as well as a look at the events and gigs in the future, and finally nods to any other notable news that affects artists and music that I cover here.
In the past, I’ve generally not posted a “tracks of the month” post at the beginning of the year, instead of waiting until early February. This year is different, partly because so many great new songs have already been released from releases due in 2019, but also because my end-of-year (Countdown) series covers December to […]
This year’s statistics – I saw 51 days worth of gigs and 156 live sets. It featured 140 different bands, and I saw sixteen twice – and all that lot were in two countries (England and Belgium) and four different cities (London, Bradford, Leeds and Sint-Niklaas).
