Category: /Reviews

I’ve written a lot of reviews over the years. This is the home of pretty much all of them since about 2003.

Into the Pit: 076: IAMX – Live at Corporation Sheffield – 16-April 2009

Anyway, last night was my first attendance at a gig at Corporation in some time, for IAMX supported by KIK. After meeting up with friends in a nearby pub, we headed down late enough, so we thought, to be able to avoid support act KIK, who I’ve seen a fair few times before and wasn’t […]

Into the Pit: 075: Covenant – Live at the Electric Ballroom – 05-April 2009

Arriving late is something of an unfortunate habit, but it doesn’t make too much different if the gig is running somewhat late anyway. But with the delays and then the waiting-an-age-at-the-bar-for-ridiculously-priced-drinks (some things never change, I see), I didn’t get any chance to catch much of Revolution by Night.

Into the Pit: 074: 65daysofstatic – Live at Fuzz Club Sheffield – 26-February 2009

Incredibly, nearly two whole months into 2009 and last night was the first gig of the year that I have attended. I’m slacking! Anyway, last night was a trip to the Fuzz Club 10th birthday celebrations, for 65daysofstatic‘s first headlining gig in their home town of Sheffield in some time.

But Listen: 080: Amduscia – Madness In Abyss

Over the past few years, the idea of “Harsh” EBM has been a popular route to take for many acts. Usually heavy of beat, with hissing vocals (the most effective often being in Spanish), sweeping, prominent synth lines and stuffed full of samples, the big problem of late is that the genre has descended into […]

But Listen: 079: ESA – The Sea and The Silence

Barely any time seems to have passed since the last album, but with a change of label to Tympanik maybe moving on quickly was the best way. Either way, with an apparently growing fanbase and lots of positive press, another album as good as the previous two would hardly be a bad thing.

Into the Pit: 073: Modulate – Live at thesubculture Leeds – 05-December 2008

Despite a slightly late and frustrating train journey – where two teenagers sharing an mp3 player were singing only loudly, and badly, to the chagrin of much of the carriage – I somehow got to the venue just in time to be in place as ESA came onstage, and the pounding beats of Your Blood […]

But Listen: 078: Cyanotic – prehab 25mg-ep

It’s been a while since the last truly new material from Cyanotic – debut album proper Transhuman goes all the way back to spring/summer 2005, the re-built (as opposed to remixed) Transhuman 2.0 goes back to summer 2007 – so it’s no stretch to suggest that new material has been a long time coming. However […]

Into the Pit: 072: Ladytron – Live at Carling Academy Sheffield – 25-November 2008

What has been a busy month or two for gigs continued last night with me heading back to Sheffield Academy 2 for the Ladytron gig. Also on downstairs in the main venue was Jarvis Cocker, so it transpired, and in some poor organisation all punters were being pointed towards one main queue, and then another […]

Memory of a Festival: 006: Damnation Festival 2008

Like what appeared to be all of the UK metal community, I headed up to Leeds yesterday for the long-awaited Damnation Festival, the biggest incarnation yet of the one-day metal festival that has had something of a nomadic existence over the past few years. The queue to get into the venue was huge at 1630 […]

But Listen: 077: Collide – Two Headed Monster

It’s amazing to think just how long it’s been since the last full Collide release. Some Kind of Strange was released way back in April 2003, and the extensive remix album Vortex a year later in April 2004. That’s nearly five and a half years since the last actual new material, and while The Secret […]

Into the Pit: 071: Anathema – Live at Carling Academy Sheffield – 06-November 2008

Support act Demians, who I’d heard glowing things about from others previously, were an interesting proposition. At least a partly-French band, they are what could probably be called one of the modern faces of Prog Rock. Lengthy songs with an epic scope, that didn’t always work entirely but left me with a positive impression, particularly […]

Into the Pit: 070: dEUS – Live in Manchester – 14-October 2008

As the rain lashed down (it was worse in Manchester than in Sheffield), I have to admit that I was beginning to question my sanity in going all the way across to Manchester on a dark, cold October night, particularly as due to the crap times of the return trains – 2218 and 0018?, Oh, […]

Into the Pit: 069: Rotersand – Live at Corporation Sheffield – 11-October 2008

After something of a quiet summer for gigs, the autumn run of lots of them worth attending is finally beginning to kick in. My attendance at this one, though, was delayed by wanting to catch the end of the football first, so I arrived only just before the end of the Deviant UK set. I’ve […]

Into the Pit: 068: Amanda Palmer – Live at Carling Academy Sheffield – 08-October 2008

For once, we got our timing spot on – literally as we walked through the door into the venue, first support Jason Webley was just starting up. Not a lot to watch, or so we thought – initially it was just Jason and his accordion (and later his acoustic guitar). As the first few songs […]

But Listen: 076: Modulate – Detonation

It’s been a long, long time since the first Modulate demos surfaced. Or at least, it feels that way – the first promo I was passed is probably over four years old, and the DJ promo that made the act’s name, Dystopia, was covered here nearly three years back. So what has happened in the […]

Into the Pit: 067: Meshuggah – Live at Corporation Sheffield – 10-September 2008

This was my first gig at Corporation in some time, and with it being up against what turned out to be a surprisingly easy win for the England national Football Team, it perhaps wasn’t as busy as might have been expected. Still, after two cancellations in the past year, it was nice to finally get […]

Into the Pit: 066: The Mirimar Disaster – Live at Carling Academy 2 Sheffield – 03-September 2008

Last night I attended the first gig of what is looking to be a busy autumn period for gigs. It was also my first gig at the new-ish Carling Academy, albeit in the smaller Academy 2. And before I get onto the gig, a few observations on the venue. It’s been open for less than […]

Memory of a Festival: 005: Infest 2008

This weekend was so fucking good – like, to the level of best Infest ever – that I when I started to write this I was wondering where to start.

But Listen: 075: Combichrist – Frost EP: Sent To Destroy

The release of new Combichrist material is both a blessing and a curse for an Industrial DJ. The blessing, of course, is that it means that you generally have at least one more sure-fire dancefloor filler, the curse being that it’s only going to get more likely to see yet more Combichrist requests (seriously, folks […]

But Listen: 074: To Mega Therion – The Blood Rituals

The release of this EP has long been on the cards, but due to issues at the label that were due to release it (Sistinas) that appeared to have sunk any chances of the CD actually being released, the perhaps surprising decision was taken to release it for free (but only for a limited period).
