Welcome to the Future: 039: Events, gigs and new release round-up 04-May 2018

Back after a week off for Whitby, another Friday, another round-up. As always this is a look at upcoming releases, relevant music news and upcoming events and gigs worth spending some of your time at. It is by no means an exhaustive list, and I’m always on the lookout for more to include.

transmission – the amodelofcontrol.com podcast – has resumed the run through of the a-z of industrial, with transmission: 003, transmission: 004, transmission: 005, transmission: 006 and transmission: 007 joining 001 and 002 online recently, and we’ll be continuing with f on transmission: 008 very soon. You can also get it via RSS, on iTunes, on Stitcher.

If you want to submit anything to be included here? E-mail me (You know what to do with that to make it work, right?), comment/message on Facebook at the amodelofcontrol.com page, and over on Twitter (@amodelofcontrol).

New and Upcoming Releases this week

Various releases to cover this week. Normally I’d say this is out of my usual remit, but the exceptional new album from
Janelle Monáe that was released last week (Dirty Computer), is a brilliant, open-minded funk-soul-hiphop-pop album that is well worth your time. Also notable are Monáe’s own admissions this week, which appear to have inspired many already.

Out today: The excellent, London-based, folky murder-balladeers LOCKS release their debut album Skeletal Blues today, and you can watch the video for recent single Bodies here. Intriguing synthpop-industrial types Blume return after a lengthy absence with Ashes, but that absence is nothing on Belly , who have returned with DOVE after over two decades.

Remarkably it is now almost a decade since Alice In Chains unexpectedly – and brilliantly – returned (Black Gives Way To Blue was #1 on Countdown: 2009: Albums here, lest we forget), and it is five since the follow-up. They have returned at last today with new single The One You Know, which is instantly better than anything off The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here, and a new album comes in the summer.

Elsewhere in upcoming releases, Rammstein have confirmed progress at last on their seventh album, anticipated to be out later in the year. While I rather like the new Little Boots track, too.

While, what is this, Britpop revival week? There is a new Suede album The Blue Hour coming in September, while Sleeper have announced work on a new album too.

Other Things

Quite remarkable news – and a sign of just how popular the band have become – is that amodelofcontrol.com favourites 3TEETH have signed to Century Media, with a new album due later in the year. I’ll no doubt see some of you at their London show next week.

The iconic guitar brand Gibson have filed for bankruptcy protection this week.

Finally, there is a film coming about Grindcore – here’s the trailer for Slave to the Grind.
