Spellbound is Brighton’s biggest and best-loved Alternative 80s night, and the annual SPELLBOUND SYNTH SPECIAL has become one of the club’s most popular events. For six (yes, six!) bleeptastic hours, DJs SIMON PRICE (Stay Beautiful) & JAYNEY BLAMBLAM (Total Blam Blam) will be honouring all those pioneers who prodded Korgs, Rolands, Moogs, Fairlights, Casios and Yamahas through the 1980s. Every record you hear, all night, will either be entirely electronic or prominently feature synthesizers and drum machines.

Think: Depeche Mode, The Human League, Kraftwerk, Gary Numan/Tubeway Army, Soft Cell, New Order, Eurythmics, Ultravox, Yazoo, Bronski Beat, Visage, Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, Heaven 17, Sparks, A Flock Of Seagulls, Pet Shop Boys, DAF, Fad Gadget, Men Without Hats, Tears For Fears, Suicide, Flying Lizards, The Cure, Dead Or Alive, Erasure, Japan, Killing Joke, Spandau Ballet, Front 242, John Foxx, The Normal, M, Alien Sex Fiend, Devo, Nitzer Ebb, Grace Jones, Talk Talk, Shriekback, Our Daughter’s Wedding, Nine Inch Nails, Talking Heads, Paul McCartney, Divine, Propaganda, The Glove, Simple Minds, Cristina, Duran Duran, Joy Division, Virgin Prunes, Thomas Dolby, Laibach, Trio, Squeeze, New Musik, Associates, Eighth Wonder, Jona Lewie, Blancmange, Yoko Ono, Pete Shelley, Landscape, Klaus Nomi, Silicon Teens and zillions more…

INCLUSIVITY AND EQUALITY
Spellbound is proud to be a friendly and inclusive safe space for all. We take a zero tolerance approach to racism, homophobia, transphobia, misogyny, ableism, and bigotry of any kind. This applies both to our club nights and our social media. Any unkind, discriminatory or predatory behaviour is unwelcome here and will result in swift removal from our spaces. We thank you all for respecting this policy, and for helping to make Spellbound the warm and welcoming place that it is.

ARRIVE EARLY!
We sell 100 tickets in advance, but we do hold some back for walk-ups on the night. (Please note that admission on the door is CASH ONLY. There is a cash machine at Tesco on Jubilee St and HSBC at the corner of Bond St and North St.) However, Spellbound is a very popular night and the venue is quite small, so it often fills up fast. We aren’t saying you won’t get in if you get there late: we liaise closely with Komedia security to ensure that queuing is as quick as possible and that people aren’t locked out unnecessarily when there’s room inside to accommodate them. But the best advice is still BUY A TICKET, and if you can’t do that, then ARRIVE EARLY!

CHEAP SNAKEBITE & BLACK!
Anyone who’s an authentic first-generation 80s relic – or anyone who’s met one and heard their frontline stories from the Goth Wars – will know that the definitive drink for alternative 80s types was ‘SNAKEBITE & BLACK’ (that is, a pint glass containing half cider, half lager and a dash of blackcurrant to send it a lurid shade of purply-red). The lovely people at Komedia have agreed to sell pints of Snakebite & Black for the tempting price of just £4.00, exclusively for Spellbound.

THE UNDERPANTS SONG!
If that wasn’t already generous enough, every month you’ll have the chance to win a FREE SHOT of Cherry Sourz! Listen out for The Underpants Song – in other words, “Underpass” by John Foxx – because every time the former Ultravox man shouts “underpants!” (that’s what it sounds like, anyway) we’ll throw a pair of Y-fronts into the crowd. If you catch one of the pants, you can exchange it at the bar for your delicious sugary shot.

YES, WE HAVE A CLOAKROOM!
There is a permanently-manned cloakroom at Spellbound to put your minds at rest when you want to ditch your belongings and dance, priced at £1 per item.

FUTURE EVENTS
We’ll be back on Sat 20 Sep and (usually) the third Saturday of the month through 2024 and 2025. When buying tickets for future Spellbounds, please bear in mind that some of them may have special themes. Watch our social media @SpellboundClub for announcements.

But for now…
See you on the 17th!
Love (Like Blood) from
Simon, Jayney and the Spellbound team x x x x
