/Welcome to the Future/149/Livestreams and new release round-up/30-Oct 2020

Sliding back towards another lockdown, it seems, but there is still new music to enjoy, hence why I continue these Friday posts. The events listing is still being updated, but obviously, an awful lot is being postponed, cancelled or changed right now.

/transmission – the amodelofcontrol.com podcast – has returned, continuing the run through of the a-z of industrial, with all episodes thus far are here. The latest episode is /transmission/024, which starts on the letter P. /transmission/025 will follow soon.

You can also get it via RSS, on iTunes, on Stitcher, and is also now available on the Google Podcasts App (search “amodelofcontrol”) and Spotify too.

If you want to submit anything to be included here? E-mail me (You know what to do with that to make it work, right?), comment/message on Facebook at the amodelofcontrol.com page, and over on Twitter (@amodelofcontrol).

/This Week/New Releases

Another really, really busy week of releases and quite a mix of styles to talk about, too.

Bradley Bills’ percussion-led industrial project CHANT return at last with new album Hydra, which builds on previous work and has, as might be expected in 2020, a distinctly political angle (which is no bad thing). While less 2020 and more 2011, Witch-House titans Salem continue their unexpected return with the follow-up to King Night, Fires In Heaven. Frankly, though, if you didn’t like Witch House the first time around…

The ever-fascinating Oneohtrix Point Never releases what I believe is their ninth album under this name, Magic Oneohtrix Point Never, while onto metal, there are two notable releases today. Long-standing Swedish Gothic Doom band Draconian release their long-trailed new album Under A Godless Veil, which delivers exactly the swooning, romantic doom I was hoping for, while the prolific sludge/doom (although that description sells them short!) band Thou have collaborated with Emma Ruth Rundle for the excellent May Our Chambers Be Full.

Also, Mr. Bungle return (of a sort), with a re-recording of their original demo, The Raging Wrath Of The Easter Bunny Demo.

Onto EPs and singles: Stabbing Westward unexpectedly released a new EP today, Hallowed Hymns, that wraps up their magnificent recent cover of Burn along with Ministry and Echo and the Bunnymen covers, all of which work nicely as a teaser for their new album Wasteland, which I understand is coming in 2021 (with a single to come before that).

In metal releases, we might have to wait that bit longer for the new Carcass album thanks to COVID, but they have released new EP Despicable in the meantime to keep us going, while of the new breed of metal bands, Scottish band Arc Arrival release a new EP C.H.A.O.S. today (although finding it outside of iTunes or streaming services appears surprisingly difficult).

A number of notable singles have come out this past week, too. First up is the lead track from the upcoming The Cassandra Complex album, The Crown Lies Heavy on the King, and it is (as the title might suggest) a blistering political polemic. Filter’s new single, Murica, has a similarly furious political take. Then there is Chicago industrial duo HIDE, who’ve also released a new single this week, the brutal Man’s Best Friend, that I’d suggest is one of their best songs yet. Finally, Leeds-based goth-rockers Zeitgeist Zero have an appropriate single for the time of the season – Satanic Sex Witch

/This Week/Upcoming Releases

A few more upcoming releases to talk about (I suspect we’ll start seeing 2021 announcements in greater numbers in the coming weeks).

Out in two weeks’ time is the new album from Icelandic dark metallers Katla, Allt þetta helvítis myrkur – the new single Sálarsvefn is something else (not to mention having an outstanding video, too). While alongside the new single, Filter have an album Murica coming “soon”.

Finally, Deftones have, after years of talking about it, formally announced White Pony remix album Black Stallion, as part of the White Pony 20th Anniversary reissue – and released a punchy and dreamy Purity Ring remix of Knife Prty too. It is out 11-Dec.

/Upcoming/Gigs/Club Nights/Events

Obviously things change at short notice right now, and I’m updating events as they are postponed or cancelled, and also including relevant Livestreams as they are announced.

This weekly listing has now seen a significant overhaul and has moved over to a Shareable calendar format. The below draws direct from a GCal I’ve long maintained, and you can add it to your own calendar views if you wish (GCal link, iCal link), and then you will get dynamic updates as I get them. Otherwise, see the events listing below – click on the links to bring up the Calendar entry.

If you have updates, relevant events for me, or want to tell me about something else, use the contact details above. It goes without saying that any gig or club still in the listing is subject to change at short notice, or may not happen at all.
