/Welcome to the Future/125/Events, gigs and new release round-up/08-May 2020

We keep going amid the lockdown. There are new releases, and new music is coming through, and buying music right now is the only way we can help. The events listing is still being updated, but obviously, an awful lot is being postponed, cancelled or changed right now.

/This Week/New Releases

The flood of releases on so-called “Bandcamp Day” last week meant I missed a few that I’ll cover now. This included an unexpected new Zola Jesus live album, Live at Roadburn 2018, a new Mogwai release in the form of ZeroZeroZero OST (the soundtrack to the adaptation of the (excellent) Roberto Saviano book Zero Zero Zero), a new Caustic EP (King of EBM) and a really punchy remaster of Heavy Water Factory’s 1997 album Author of Pain.

Onto new releases this week. The intriguing synthpop of Choir Boy has their second album Gathering Swans, hardcore supergroup Fake Names release their self-titled debut, and grunge/rock/blues veteran Mark Lanegan releases his (sublime) latest album Straight Songs of Sorrow.

There are various new tracks to check out, too. The sublime doom metal of Draconian is finally back, with new single , GoFight have released their latest single Ghosts of the Earth, before the album drops in July, while Beth Rettig’s Where We Sleep project released a new song this week, the bleak, pared-back Everybody Leaves A Mark, that seems to perfectly reflect the mood of the times.

/This Week/Upcoming Releases

A bit of a surprise announcement this week was of the first new Portion Control album in some time, Head Buried. The title track has been revealed at the same time, and it’s every bit the industrial brute that I’d expect.

Also <PIG> continue their punishing release schedule with the Sex & Death EP on 10-Jul, while out on the same date is the latest album from Dawn of Ashes, The Antimonian.

/Upcoming/Gigs/Club Nights/Events

Obviously things have rather changed right now, and I’m updating events as they are postponed or cancelled, and also including relevant Livestreams as they are announced.

Notable – and unsurprising, in the circumstances – postponements this past week have been of Infest and Bloodstock, both of which now won’t happen in their usual forms this year, and have instead moved to the corresponding weekends next year. I understand there will be something done virtually by both festivals this summer – watch this space.

This weekly listing has now seen a significant overhaul, and has moved over to a Shareable calendar format that is embedded below. You can add it to your own calendar views if you wish (GCal link, iCal link), and then you will get dynamic updates as I get them. Otherwise see the embedded calendar below.

If you have updates, relevant events for me, or want to tell me about something else, use the contact details above.
