Welcome to the Future: 013: Music news round-up 22-September 2017

This week’s update comes to you fresh from amodelofcontrol.com attending it’s thirty-first gig of 2017 last night, which was the long-awaited London return of ex-Mansun frontman Paul Draper, at The Scala. It was notable for a few reasons, not least how long it is since he last toured (with Mansun), and how good the show was despite that – and yes, he played a handful of raucously-received Mansun songs.

But most importantly, it was notable for the fact that across the set, aside from some good-natured heckling, there was none of the usual hubbub of chatter. It can be done, then – and I just wish it would more often.

Another thing to announced is that my DJing alter-ego DJ:traumahound returns to the decks in a few weeks time at the GVWI Hallowe’en Party, alongside some familiar names. I have one more DJ commitment this year, too, that I’ll announce in good time.

A reminder that amodelofcontrol.com will be at Whitby next month (although unlikely to be writing about bands – it’s a holiday for the site! – I’ll be playing for Real Gothic FC as usual, though) and then also BIMFest 2017 in December – as well as various other gigs in London (and potentially at least one more some way further afield).

If you want to submit anything to be included here? E-mail me (You know what to do with that to make it work, right?), comment/message on Facebook at the amodelofcontrol.com page, and over on Twitter (@amodelofcontrol).

New Releases this week

Another week of a lot of releases, and some pretty notable ones too.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor’s third album since their re-activation is Luciferian Towers, while Chelsea Wolfe’s fifth album Hiss Spun is her heaviest album yet.

The Horrors have moved their style on again with the electronic rock of V (the singles have been exceptional), Tricky seems to be looking backwards with ununiform, while Cradle of Filth are back with Cryptoriana – The Seductiveness of Decay.

Upcoming Releases

There is new Prodigy on the way, and perhaps more surprisingly, there are murmurs about a new My Bloody Valentine album in the works. That said, I’ll believe the latter when I have it in my hands…

…and let’s avoid the new Morrissey single, right? This never happened – clearly his music is now as irrelevant as his often abhorrent “opinions”.

Other things

Sadiq Khan has, at last, ordered the Met Police to review the 696 form, which always looked like a worryingly race-reliant assessment.

Also not before time is Peter Hook and New Order finally reaching a settlement over their long-simmering legal dispute.

Two other things worth a read today: Tina Weymouth getting some of the respect she’s long-deserved, and a deeply odd interview with Marilyn Manson in the Guardian today. His new material, incidentally, is the best he’s done in years (the album is out soon).

Finally, Donald Tardy of Obituary rescues cat from Hurricane Irma.
