January 13 @ 19:30 - 22:00 GMT£6.60
CHARLEY STONE PRESENTS another evening of non-hierarchical DIY indie-“art”-punk, to see in 2023 with a Friday 13th extravanganza which will change your lives!!!! NB live music curfew at 10pm so please get there early to #supportTheScene, cheers.
Expected running order is as follows:
THE ETHICAL DEBATING SOCIETY – 7.3Opm
You’d better all get there early, because the evening begins with one of my favourite post-riot-grrrl punk bands ever. Three-piece! (which always gets my vote). Two guitars instead of guitar plus bass! (which always especially interests me). “Uncool, unconnected” they say. VERY cool, & creating a moment of total connection with all Viewers, is what I say.
CHARLEY STONE with an ACTUAL BAND – 8.20pm
I am, of course, Charley Stone. And so now I have to describe myself like you do on those “dating” apps I can’t deal with. Well, let’s see. Probably best known as guitarist with “all the bands” – most recently Sleeper and Desperate Journalist, but also “concept” bands such as The Fallen Women, Joanne Joanne and Ye Nuns. Solo gigs see me channeling my inner Jonathan Richman / Jack White / Daniel Johnston but with a voice veering between Mo Tucker and Tanya Donnelly, probably. But, it’s not just me – I also have an Actual Band, meaning that in this live setting the songs are augmented and embiggened by Lily Rae from the Fightmilk band and “Actual” Martin from the legendary The Charlemagnes, etc.
KEITH TOTP & HIS MINOR UK INDIE CELEBRITY ALL-STAR BACKING BAND – 9.15pm
Keith TOTP is the best man, and his band genuinely changes lives. Well, it changed mine, anyway! But also the lives of the Viewers. Fact: one time I wore a Keith TOTP t-shirt onstage at Kentish Town’s Forum, when playing with one of my “other” bands. After playing I was hanging out in the upstairs bar with my colleagues of rock, when a stranger approached, saying “excuse me, I hope you don’t mind me interrupting…” – naturally I smiled in expectation of praise for my performance – “… but I have to say, great t-shirt! Keith TOTP is amazing! I saw him at [insert name of venue] and he changed my life!” So, there – the General Public have spoken. Keith’s gigs are always joyous occasions, with several guitarists galore and as many brass/woodwind/other(s) as can be assembled on a stage, creating a wall of sound which is unique to each occasion. Expect to be highly entertained with songs the other bands wish they had written, and for the evening to end in utter mayhem with an extended rendition of the best 2-chord song about how all other bands are just ripping him off, 4real.
