Hey Spellbounders! Back by popular demand, the long-awaited return of the SPELLBOUND GOTH SPECIAL will happen on SATURDAY 21st JANUARY! Hairspray? Check. Eyeliner? Check. White greasepaint? Check. Entirely black wardrobe (with possible concessions made to a touch of purple, or frilly white lace)? Check. This month, instead of playing one or two of The Sisters Of Mercy’s greatest hits, we’ll play pretty much ALL of them. Same goes for Siouxsie And The Banshees, Bauhaus and The Cramps, plus the best of The Cult and The Cure’s, shall we say, darker periods. This will be the Spellbound where if you ask for, I dunno, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry or Lords Of The New Church or March Violets, we’ll actually say “Yeah, OK!” instead of “Um, maybe…” You can also expect to hear the likes of Alien Sex Fiend, Specimen, Fields Of The Nephilim, X-Mal Deutschland, The Birthday Party, Joy Division, Danielle Dax, The Damned, Christian Death, Theatre Of Hate, Skeletal Family, Ghost Dance, Sex Gang Children, DAF, The Mission, James Ray & The Performance, Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds, The Bolshoi, The Creatures, Gene Loves Jezebel, Nitzer Ebb, Virgin Prunes, Killing Joke, Front 242 etc etc (and we’ll ensure that whatever non-gothic stuff we play is suitably Batcave-friendly in mood). And don’t sit in front of the smoke machine, because it’ll very much be in use. Alright, let’s get gothed out of our tiny minds!

WHAT WE’RE ALL ABOUT
Spellbound, which happens on (usually) the third Saturday of every month, is the 80s night for people who HATE 80s nights. Other 80s nights might give you the kitsch and the cheese, but we play the REAL good stuff from music’s greatest-ever era (our core timespan is approx 1979-1985, with Tubeway Army on Top Of The Pops as our Year Zero and the Live Aid concert as our Doomsday, but we do spin the odd track from outside that range if it’s good enough), to a wonderfully mixed crowd of grown-ups who remember it all from first time around and young ‘uns just discovering it ‘as new’. And look out for the Eighties visuals to help with the Time Travel… You want genres? Goth, Post-Punk, New Romantic, Alternative Rock, New Wave, Indie Rock, Synth Pop and Ska… but this month we’re all about the GOTH!

ARRIVE EARLY!
We sell 100 tickets in advance, but we do hold some back for walk-ups on the night. However, Spellbound is a very popular night and the venue is quite small, so it often fills up fast. We aren’t saying you won’t get in if you get there late: we liaise closely with Komedia security to ensure that queuing is as quick as possible and that people aren’t locked out unnecessarily when there’s room inside to accommodate them. But the best advice is still BUY A TICKET, and if you can’t do that, ARRIVE EARLY!

CHEAP SNAKEBITE & BLACK!
Anyone who’s an authentic first-generation 80s relic – or anyone who’s met one and heard their frontline stories from the Goth Wars – will know that the definitive drink for alternative 80s types was ‘SNAKEBITE & BLACK’ (that is, a pint glass containing half cider, half lager and a dash of blackcurrant to send it a lurid shade of purply-red). The lovely people at Komedia have agreed to sell pints of Snakebite & Black for the tempting price of just £4.00, exclusively for Spellbound!

THE UNDERPANTS SONG!
If that wasn’t already generous enough, every month you’ll have the chance to win a FREE SHOT! Listen out for The Underpants Song – in other words, “Underpass” by John Foxx – because every time the former Ultravox man shouts “underpants!” (that’s what it sounds like, anyway) we’ll throw a pair of Y-fronts into the crowd. If you catch one of the pants, you can exchange it at the bar for a shot of something strong!

YES, WE HAVE A CLOAKROOM!
There is a permanently-manned cloakroom at Spellbound to put your minds at rest when you want to ditch your belongings and dance, priced at £1 per item.
