Calling all Goths, ex-Goths, recovering Goths, closet Goths, Goths in denial and the Goth-curious of Brighton! The last time we did the SPELLBOUND GOTH SPECIAL, back in January, loads of people asked us why it only happens once a year. We looked at the calendar and saw that the Spellbound on SATURDAY 21st MAY is the eve of WORLD GOTH DAY, so it was a no-brainer. We’ve listened to popular demand and brought the Goth Special back!

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS TIME…

Excessive amounts of hairspray, eyeliner, snakebite, dry ice, and six hours of gothic classics 1979-89 from the likes of Alien Sex Fiend, Bauhaus, The Birthday Party, The Bolshoi, Christian Death, The Cramps, The Cult, The Cure, The Damned, Danielle Dax (this month’s artwork heroine), Fields Of The Nephilim, Flesh For Lulu, Gene Loves Jezebel, The Gun Club, Joy Division, Killing Joke, Lords Of The New Church, Love And Rockets, The March Violets, The Mission, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, Sex Gang Children, Siouxsie And The Banshees, Specimen, The Sisters Of Mercy, Vicious Pink, Virgin Prunes, Xmal Deutschland & more…

WHAT SPELLBOUND IS ALL ABOUT
Spellbound, which happens on (usually) the third Saturday of every month is the 80s night for people who HATE 80s nights. Other 80s nights might give you the kitsch and the cheese, but we play the REAL good stuff from music’s greatest-ever era (our core timespan is approx 1979-1985, with Tubeway Army on Top Of The Pops as our Year Zero and the Live Aid concert as our Doomsday, but we do spin the odd track from outside that range if it’s good enough), to a wonderfully mixed crowd of grown-ups who remember it all from the first time around and young ‘uns just discovering it ‘as new’. And lookout for the Eighties visuals to help with the Time Travel… Do you want genres? Goth, Post-Punk, New Romantic, Alternative Rock, New Wave, Indie Rock, Synth Pop and Ska… but this month we’re all about the GOTH!

ARRIVE EARLY!

We sell 100 tickets in advance, but we do hold some back for walk-ups on the night. However, Spellbound is a very popular night and the venue is quite small, so it often fills up fast. We aren’t saying you won’t get in if you get there late: we liaise closely with Komedia security to ensure that queuing is as quick as possible and that people aren’t locked out unnecessarily when there’s room inside to accommodate them. But the best advice is still BUY A TICKET, and if you can’t do that, ARRIVE EARLY!

CHEAP SNAKEBITE & BLACK!
Anyone who’s an authentic first-generation 80s relic – or anyone who’s met one and heard their frontline stories from the Goth Wars – will know that the definitive drink for alternative 80s types was ‘SNAKEBITE & BLACK’ (that is, a pint glass containing half cider, half lager and a dash of blackcurrant to send it a lurid shade of purply-red). The lovely people at Komedia have agreed to sell pints of Snakebite & Black for the tempting price of just £4.00, exclusively for Spellbound!

THE UNDERPANTS SONG!
If that wasn’t already generous enough, every month you’ll have the chance to win a FREE SHOT! Listen out for The Underpants Song – in other words, “Underpass” by John Foxx – because every time the former Ultravox man shouts “underpants!” (that’s what it sounds like, anyway) we’ll throw a pair of Y-fronts into the crowd. If you catch one of the pants, you can exchange it at the bar for a shot of something strong!

YES, WE HAVE A CLOAKROOM!
There is a permanently-manned cloakroom at Spellbound to put your minds at rest when you want to ditch your belongings and dance, priced at £1 per item.
